Is there something about a rose ?

Ever wonder why roses are automatically linked to love or romance? Face it, you never see a heart-shaped baloon filled with sunflower drawings on a Valentine's day (no offense to sunflowers lovers). Is it the red color that ignites passion ? Is it the sweet, inviting fragrance, or is it simply the beauty of a single stem rose, gracefully surrounded by heart-shaped Hershey kisses?

Is there something about a rose ?

My theory is, the fact that a rose has both beauty and boldness, it also has those dangerous and hurtful tiny things all around its stem... called thorns. It can stab right through your skin, it can make you cringe, and it can certainly make you bleed. Boy, no wonder roses are assimilated with love... they have almost the same attributes! (except the cringing part, sometimes love gives you more than a cringe)
I'm no Dr. Romance and not really a love expert, but having lived on this earth for 24 years (and still going strong!) in three different countries, survived (and undergoing) various relationships along the way; I can really testify that love or relationship, can be beautiful, bold, powerful and sometimes painful... just like a rose.

Rose, just like love, comes in many colors. You have white roses for grand relationships, for a love that is graceful and elegant... mostly used for wedding or directed to people you respect, like you mom, etc. Then you have pink roses, a symbol of innocence and new beginnings. When you have a light tiny crush on someone, pink roses are the best one to give. Then don't forget those fake, brush-painted blue/purple/beige/whatever-color-you-have-in-mind roses which, I personally think, signify nothing. Honestly, if you really want to be true in showing your feelings and emotions, why giving something that don't even exist in the first place?
Sure they look pretty, but hello... they're not real. Just my opinion though.

Having said that, this raise another question to the table.. what's with women and flowers, specifically roses ? Why do we crave those stems and stems of roses that probably cost more than our entire household's weekly grocerry.. when we're fully aware that in less than one week, this beautiful and elegantly arranged bouqet, will be... well, trash.

I don't have the answer for this one. But one thing I know, just like any other Valentine's day like today, I still smile sheepisly, hold those graceful stems of roses like a crown and embrace the whole bouqet with gladness, including the thorns. Cause you see, that's part of the beauty of a rose.
And that's the beauty of love.
